UJA Federation New York chooses to alienate 90% of Jews

by Reb Akiva at Mystical Paths

The UJA Federation of New York (United Jewish Appeal merged with Jewish Federation) ran a campaign to vote on the "next big idea" for their organization....

More than 10,000 people voted to advance one "big idea" that fosters the relationship between New Yorkers and Israelis. And the winner is ...

I know very little about this organization, though I am well aware that UJA's and Jewish Federations have been primarily connected to and funded by the non-observant parts of the US Jewish community - and therefore I shouldn't expect them to focus on Jewish causes like synagogues, Jewish religious education, and certainly not connecting US Jewish to Israel by literally walking them through the locations mentioned in the Torah (bible) and Jewish holy sites.

One would hope if you're trying to build the future that they would focus on BIG things, things affecting LARGE portions of the community.  Say for example threats of violence and growing anti-semitism.  Or growing general US public disdain for anyone who has traditional, religious or moral values.

If so, one would hope in vain.  Rather, it's time to get on the bandwagon of the tide of hyper accommodation of minuscule segments of society who feel uncomfortable that they can't flaunt their choices in the street (though they've been doing so for 20 years) or in the middle of the synagogue.

And the winner is ... Creating Inclusive Community for LGBTQ+ Jews in Israel and NY!

That may be where the attention is at, but it's not where the future of Judaism is at.

  1. Very well said Reb Akiva. So good to hear from you. Maybe this. The religious really do have NefeshbNefesh, if they want to move here (to save their lives). So those not connected fully, or even by 25%, should have a means to become connected to anything remotely and really Jewish. HaShem is giving them a way to connect and eventual teshuva. Once here in any way, maybe those neshomas will become awakened. I believe that someway, in some manner, due to either an awakening from Shamayim or a spiritual shock, some of those distanced souls will become part of greater Am Yisrael. We are so close to the end, and all the fractured neshomas need one last chance — despite the Erev Rav and despite the anti-religious ones.
