What’s in a Name?

   by Reb Gutman Locks

One of my readers from India just had a baby girl and he asked me to please give the baby her name. I told him that he and his wife should stand by the baby and say, "Hashem, what should we name our daughter?" and see what comes to mind. He later told me that the name Hadassah came to mind and this is what they named their daughter. I told him that Hadassah means compassion, and that his daughter will be compassionate.

A person's name reflects the work they came into the world to accomplish. It really addresses their potential. When parents give their children their names Hashem whispers softly to them what name to choose. It is like a moment of prophecy.

See who you are named after and look at their lives. What were their strengths and what were their weaknesses? See how that applies to your life. Try to emulate their strengths and avoid their weaknesses. This applies to the Biblical source of that name too, so if you have a Biblical name look at that person's life too.

Everything that comes to you comes for a reason, especially if it is something that you will carry with you your entire life.
