Been Here a Month

by Reb Akiva @ Mystical Paths

My uncle, he should live and be well, has been visiting Israel for the past month.  He arrived to visit his grandchildren, participate in a bat mitzvah, and spend time in the Holy Land.  Here’s his insights…

Been here a month, and a week and a half to go. Auntie and I  are watching the insanity unfurl around us -- the continuous and unrelenting attacks by Palestinians, with knives, with meat cleavers, with guns, with cars. The goal? Simply to kill Jews, or in the words of one Palestinian teenager, to “teach the Jews a lesson.”

The reason? Chairman Abbas says the Jews want to take over the Temple Mount, to pollute the Aqsa Mosque with “their dirty feet.” He said that the Palestinians will no longer abide by the Oslo Accords.

The real reason? Prime Minister Netanyah has called upon Abbas to meet, to resume negotiations for a two state solution -- without preconditions. That’s the key: without preconditions. But Abbas cannot do that, so he’s turned to the standard Palestinian backup position -- terrorist attacks on Jews.

The latest insanity? Palestinians have issued instructional videos for their kids -- How to Stab a Jew. Check it out.

Auntie and I are sitting in the midst of an Orwellian psychosis.

Palestinians are stabbing Jews in the back – men, women and children. And the Jews are blamed in the world’s press. Read on.

After a stabbing attack in the Old City of Jerusalem, a Jewish woman ran to Arab shopkeepers with a knife in her shoulder, crying for help: “Please, save my baby. Save my baby!” The shopkeepers spat on her.

A 13-year-old Palestinian and his older teenage accomplice stabbed a Jewish boy on a bike, critically wounding him. The Arabs went for another Jew and were shot by police. The response of the world’s press? “Israelis shoot 13-year-old Palestinian.” The response of Abbas? The boy died a martyr.

The truth? The Palestinian boy is recovering in a Jewish Hospital, after treatment by Jewish doctors.

The madness has reached a feverish pitch.

Members of the UN are now calling for more stabbings. Yes, that's right.

The Palestinians are calling for war crime trials against Israel. Nothing new there.

The US State Department is calling for an end to the “cycle of violence,” and condemning Israel for the use of excessive force!

My God. When will this insanity end?

The truth? Israel is a tiny country, some 325 miles from end to end, less that 15 miles wide at its narrowest point, surrounded by hundreds of millions of Muslims bent on the elimination of the Jewish State and the murder of Jews (in a single attack, Arab terrorists killed dozens of Jews as far away as Argentina). Israel is home to 6.2 million Jews and 1.7 million Arabs, less than half a million others.

Yet despite its tiny size, Israel has some of the finest colleges and universities in the world. The Israel Philharmonic is as good as any orchestra anywhere. Israeli Museums are sparkling gems of learning, full of art and history. Israeli technology is a world leader and Israeli start-up companies are second in number only to start-ups in the U.S.A. Despite the constant threat of rockets and bombs and stabbings and shootings, despite the horrific threats of invasion and genocide, Israel provides a high standard of living with free medical care and free education for all its citizens, Arab and Jew, Druze and Christian etc.  Israel is a multi-ethnic democracy with Arabs sitting in the Knesset, the Israeli Parliament. Israel may be the only Middle Eastern country in which Arab women can vote in free elections.

So why don’t the Palestinians create museums and orchestras and businesses? Why not? Because their business is killing Jews. I heard a Hamas official say, “For us, DEATH is an INDUSTRY!” Hard to listen to for a Jew who from his earliest days, hears the cry, “l’Chaim!” To life.

They sanctify Death.  We sanctify Life.

In fact the Torah commands Jews to chose life: Deut. 30:15:

‘See I’ve placed before you today, the Life and the Good, and the Death and the Evil . . . ‘ and again in Deut. 30:19-20: ‘I call Heaven and earth today to bear witness against you: I have placed life and death before you, blessing and curse, and you shall choose life, so that you will live, you and your offspring -- to love the Lord, your God, to listen to His voice and to cleave to Him, for He is your life and the Length of your days, to dwell upon the land that the Lord swore to your forefathers, to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob, to give them.’

Several years ago, in the interest of peace and good will, Israel unilaterally ceded the Gaza Strip to the Palestinian Arabs. Israel left the infrastructure, buildings and greenhouses and farms intact, and in fact the Israel Army had forcefully to remove several Jewish families from their homes in Gaza.

Israel offered tens of millions of dollars to help the Arabs build a new society, maybe even to transform the Gaza Strip into a new Mediterranean paradise, like the French Riviera.

So what did the Arabs do? They voted in Hamas, a terrorist organization. They immediately demolished the Jewish infrastructure, and transformed the Gaza Strip into a launching pad for rockets and mortars aimed at Jewish civilians.

But the Jewish people prevail. The people of Israel prevail.

Because the Guardian of Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps.

Here’s a few of the interesting things I’ve noticed…

- Parade of Christians through the Jerusalem Old City in support of Israel; the group I saw from China.

- A Druze Arab visiting the Western Wall; the Druze are fiercely loyal to Israel and serve in the Israel Army.

- Russian naval cadets in the Jerusalem Old City.  What were they doing there?

Hoping everyone is safe and well, Uncle.

  1. These Muslims have brainwashed their kids. I hate to get all "Clockwork Orange" here, but these kids need to be deprogrammed. As it is written, "Train up a child in the way he should go, and even when he is old, he will not depart from it" - (Proverbs 22:6).

Like all the other kids of my generation, who grew up watching TV and going to movies and listening to folk ballads (etc), I'm the sum total of my culture, though it's not much of a culture these days, since things have apparently gone to the dogs.

Having studied the Rabbinic Literature for decades, I can see now the hand of Jewish writers in the TV series and films and music of my youth; and despite the fact that many of these Jewish writers are living a secular lifestyle, they drew upon the ethical and moral literature of their forefathers.

Some use this fact to fuel their twisted conspiracy theories, but I see in this the Hand of Ha-Shem trying to educate the Nations to turn away from their avodah zarah and instead turn to Him. It worked for me.

Having said that, I'd like to see the same thing happen with these Muslim kids; and the younger the better. There has to be someone in Klal Yisrael with the connections and money to hook-up with some moderate Muslims to create shows geared toward teaching these Arab kids how to love their fellow creatures and how living in peace with one's neighbors is a positive, rather than a negative thing for both parties. (Do any of the various Star Trek series play on Muslim TV stations?)

Further, Jews must do everything they can - in thought, word, and deed - to counter the programming that these Arab kids receive from the garbage they currently get from Muslim TV shows.

Yes, once again, it seems that the Jewish people are stuck with the burden of being a light unto the Nations. I'm not a Jew, nor am I worthy of becoming a Jew, but I see this as the only way to repair the world (tikkun olam). Is it right that Klal Yisrael should bear this weight alone? Nope, but that's what the Jewish people signed up for at Har Sinai. I'm willing to be a co-working partner in this endeavor and I do what I can to be a good PR guy for Judaism, Hasidism, and the Jewish State, but it's an uphill struggle to be sure, especially since I'm going it alone where I am.
