The Mitzvah I Ignored to my Peril (2), So Many Health Problems

25 years of a sedentary lifestyle and 70 pounds of added body weight come with a host of medical diagnoses...

- “Metabolic syndrome” which means “near diabetic” with high blood sugar.  The worry?  At some point this becomes actual diabetes, with all it’s associated terrible problems.

- “Non-alcoholic fatty liver”.  This often comes along with the above and sometimes turns into cancer or a non-functioning liver (transplant or death).  It also prevents cholesterol treatments.

- High cholesterol and triglycerides.  Not treatable due to the fatty liver.  Increased risk of heart attack.

- High blood pressure.  Increased risk of heart attack and organ damage.  Treatable with medication.

- Morbidly Obese.  That just means seriously overweight.  I already knew that.

When hearing someone is overweight, the frequent response is “so eat less”.  “Why are you eating unhealthy?”  "Can't you control yourself?".  Yet nowadays many are having such problems, and doing so while eating per nutritional standards.

In my home, my wife has been VERY health conscious.  She skins the chickens and eliminates the fat.  She cooks without salt.  No butter.  Whole wheat bread and spelt challah.  Low sugar cooking.  Plenty of fresh vegetables.  Not too many kugels.  Turkey in the cholent (instead of fatty beef).  Cakes and cookies only for Yom Tov (holidays).  Shmaltz?  Once on Pesach (Passover) only.  Pizza or a burger, maybe once a month.

The diet is healthy by nutritional standards.  But I gained 70 pounds and a host of health issues.  Something is wrong here!  I “eat healthy” but I’m getting sicker and sicker and heavier and heavier. 

I’ve felt there is nothing I could do!  The doctor adds a medication and instructs me to see the nutritionist, who gives menus similar to what I'm already eating.  And I continue to struggle to remain functional every day.

    But if it is true, maybe I can help.

    First of all, you are not eating healthily. Sorry to say. Your wife means well and I'm sure she is doing her best. However, you must give up the "so called healthy Jewish eating" foods.

    No whole wheat bread, or any bread.
    Maybe only spelt challah on Shabbat only, and only the minimum for Brochos.

    No potatoes, noodles, pasta, kugels, rice.

    Yes to asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, mushrooms, maybe green beans.

    Only organic coconut oil and extra virgin olive oil.

    Gluten free pancakes, waffles, eggs, and fruit for breakfast.

    Lunch: Salad (lettuce, Kirby's, peppers, celery. Radishes) and protein: white meat chicken, sautéed; or beef burger, or turkey or chicken burger.

    Dinner: with your new juice machine, you make wheat grass juice, and other healthy juice combinations. I suggest the new model of the Hurom Slow Juicer, and it's booklet gives juice combos for various health situations. My husband juices two bags of carrots and wheat grass green juice.     Akiva, you are. Getting the wrong advice. There is even another approach that will definitely help you get the lbs off and keep them off.

    I don't like having to use accounts that I barely use at all otherwise, but I am here, just for you right now.

    I agree with almost all of what Neshama says (I am just now discovering coconut oil). It's not that I disagree with her, but she mentioned things I haven't tried yet (e.g. wheat grass juice).

    I have been going through a mini-crisis myself the last few months, with rising blood sugar and weight - and I am a 9-year diabetic, but a much healthier one. Prior to this I have been managing to keep my sugars pretty close to normal.

    My work hours vary month to month - I'm working 10.75 hour days this month and 10-hour days for the last couple - hopefully 8-hour days next month! But I never know till the last minute! I'm also (mostly) sedentary. But I find that even marching in place or lifting my arms and punching as though I'm hitting a boxer's punching bag for a few minutes will help get my heart moving and clear my brain. I MUST move every day OR ELSE. Maybe you too?

    Cleaning the house on Erev Shabbat (and any day I see something to do) is good for me too.

    I have a recommendation to keep sugars down:

    marva (sage) tea (cheap and effective) - and plenty of water.

    I have other suggestions too, but don't want to overwhelm you. What you want is balance, not low or high sugars.

    Last but not least, what is your mother's Hebrew name, so we can pray for you!
