Want a Cup of Coffee?

by Reb Gutman Locks @ Mystical Paths

This has to be one for Guinness’s Book of World Records. At around 4:00 in the morning, Dovid and his wife open their tiny outdoor coffee shop in the Kotel Plaza. He serves several types of coffee, tea, and hot cocoa. There is also cake on the two small tables where the sugar is.

There are two or three things that make this coffee shop unique in the world. Number one, he closes the shop in time to daven neitz (prayers at sunrise). I know of no other coffee shop in the world that closes for neitz. Besides the cartons of cakes that he puts out on the table, he serves 1,000 cups of coffee a day. And the main unique thing about his Kotel coffee shop…there is no charge! It is all absolutely free.

He told me that it costs around $400 a day to provide the service, and that he gets some help from generous donors, but has to make up the balance out of his own pocket.

Next time you are at the Kotel for neitz, stop by and have a cup of coffee. It’s on the house!
