No One Ever Asked

by Reb Gutman Locks @ Mystical Paths

He is a 48 year-old Israeli from Russia. He has lived in Israel for 17 years. I asked him to, “Come put on tefillin,” and he said, “Okay, but I do not know how to do it.” He held out his arm and said, “I have never done it before.”

I asked him in Russian if his mother was Jewish, thinking maybe she wasn’t, and that was why he had never put on tefillin. He assured me that she was.

After he read the Shema in Russian, I showed him how to pray for his family and the things that he wanted to bring into the world. “It’s like your bar mitzvah today. G-d is going to listen to you. Tell Him everything you want.”

He really liked it. He had his young son run and get their camera from his wife who was standing in the square. When I took the tefillin off, I asked him, “Why haven’t you ever put on tefillin before. You see how nice it is to do.”

He answered, “No one ever asked me.”
