“And a new king arose that did not know Yosef.” (Shemot 1:8)
As I write this, the new President of the United States Donald Trump has laid down his rulings for his first week…and those who disagree with him have risen up to protest the new king. And it does not matter whether their facts are true or not (Obama started the massive presidential “laying down of rulings” aka executive orders) or that an Obama law and interpretation from 2015 was used to select/identify “dangerous countries” from which immigration should be stopped.
Even my father and I are arguing over this…literally via Whatsapp as I type this.
Scott Adams: “As a trained persuader, I’m seeing a dangerous situation forming... The setup is that during the presidential campaign Trump’s critics accused him of being Hitler(ish) and they were sure other citizens would see it too, thus preventing this alleged monster from taking office. They were wrong. The alleged monster took office.
Now you have literally millions of citizens in the United States who were either right about Trump being the next Hitler, and we will see that behavior emerge from him soon, or they are complete morons. That’s a trigger for cognitive dissonance. The science says these frightened folks will start interpreting all they see as Hitler behavior no matter how ridiculous it might seem to the objective observer. And sure enough, we are seeing that.
From over here in Israel, even though I am a US citizen, it’s hard to understand what’s going on. I was around for the change from Carter to Reagan, very opposite ends of the political spectrum when the media said Reagan would get us all blown up in World War III. (Instead he won the cold war and caused the collapse of the Soviet Union.) No big protests or riots, though the media was very nervous. I was around for the change from Bush 1 to Clinton, a swing from conservative and business oriented to liberal. The media was happy, the businesses were scared (the stock market went down). No protest, no riots, no companies fleeing the country. Clinton to Bush II, which was battled to the last vote and multiple legal challenges. The media was pissed, and sure the new president was an idiot. No riots, no giant protests. With Bush and after 9/11, the conservatives were SURE, VERY VERY SURE, that liberalism was DEAD. “Compassionate Conservativism” would rule forever. But the electorate was tired of war and excited by a young new voice who would break the ethnic barriers. And the media was euphoric though this time there were riots…as some ethnic communities were sure they now were going to get theirs. And as Obama steered the US in his preferred direction, the liberals were SURE, VERY VERY SURE, that conservatism was DEAD. “Enlightened Liberalism” would rule forever. But the electorate was tired of culture war and economic division, and was excited about a new voice in the political arena that spoke of their challenges and related to their problems.
And there were riots, and pink protests, and vows of the liberals to STOP THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES – even before he had done anything.
Is President Trump right or wrong? It really doesn’t matter. What does is that the U.S. is moving to chaos as people fall for their own beliefs, with a significant portion of people fighting the evil – even before it’s done anything evil and only evil in their own minds. Another another significant portion feeling that he is their savior from an out of control system.
And the conflict grows. Chaos is never good for the Jews.
