When They Came to Take Me

     He was born in Poland, but has lived most of his life in America. I called out;

     "Hi, did you put on tefillin today?

     He nodded.

     I wasn't sure if he nodded just to get rid of me or if he had really put on tefillin.

     He sensed my questioning and spoke up loudly to show me that he was a religious Jew (Torah observant).

     "When they came to take me to Auschwitz I was wearing my tallit katan (the fringed garment that religious Jewish men wear). I was liberated from Auschwitz in 1945."

     I took his picture to share with you, and I kissed him.
