A Very Special Breakfast

A Very Special Breakfast

Once a year, my friend Avi brings his students by for breakfast. One might think that since these boys are all classified as "special needs" that it might have been a depressing morning. But you know what; everyone was happy and laughing the entire time.

So the question has to be, if these young Jews who have a heavy learning disadvantage can be happy most of the time, why isn't everyone happy most of the time?

We all have pretty much the same needs. We all need health, a way to make a living, we want to have someone to love, and we want kids, and friends, too. We also need some level of spiritual understanding; the higher the better.

But most often, most of us are missing at least one of these. It seems to just be the way things are. Not everyone is blessed to be married. Not everyone merits having children. Not everyone is blessed to live comfortably in their own home. And not so many of us live life with the spiritual awareness that we should have.

So if we are missing something so important, how can we be happy? Actually, it is a lot easier than it seems.

To be happy, all we have to do is to focus on the happy things that we do have. That's it.

And to be unhappy, all we have to do is to focus on the good things that we do not have.

When we focus on the good things that we do not have, we forget all about the good things that we do have. And when we focus on the good things that we do have, we forget about the good things that we do not have.

    Have a happy day.
