Matanot L’evyonim, gifts to the poor for Purim. It’s a mitzvah, but it’s annoying. So my Yetzer Hara says… Avoid it!
Yes, the mtizvah is to give “gifts to the poor”, and one who gives more is deserving of praise. But who needs praise, pass the wine instead!
Yes, (Mishne Torah Hilchos Megillah) we should INCREASE in the amount given to the poor instead of giving more Shloach Manos or having a bigger Seudas Purim (Purim Party). But I seriously need a good steak.
Hey, where’s the poor? I don’t see any poor! Yeah, there’s that guy sleeping in his car, but maybe he likes it there? Yeah, there’s that family who’s months behind in their rent and in danger of being thrown onto the street, but maybe they should have moved to a cheaper place.
“During the year when giving charity, one may check and see if a person is deserving / in need. On Purim, one should give happily to anyone who asks for it, since Matanot L’evyonim has the purpose of creating Purim joy…”
For the past 8 years we at Mystical Paths have offered to be your agent to directly fulfill the mitzvah of Matanot L’evyonim, charity gifts to the poor for Purim, with the poor and needy of Israel, with no overhead, expenses, office fees or advertising fees (as a registered Israeli charity with rabbinical supervision – details available upon request).
But why would we help these people? Sometimes they look funny. Sometimes they smell funny. They kvetch and groan.
So while the evil inclination would prefer me and you to ignore those in need, we have an OBLIGATION to do so.
Bring some light and happiness and joy to those who are in VERY SERIOUS NEED. Donate today, RIGHT NOW, to help the poor and needy for Purim in Israel.
YETZER Hara says: “I vote sit! Do not DONATE BELOW!”
** ALL DONATIONS via registered Israeli charity Yesh Ma L’asot. Purim charity campaign supervised by Rabbi Chaim Farro of Ramat Beit Shemesh, Israel. NO overhead or expenses beyond Paypal fees and money changing fees, approximately 4%. YETZER HARA adds, “avoid donating and you don’t have to care.”
