Twenty Years Ago

by Reb Gutman Locks

It was the third time within a week. Someone walked up to me and said, “Do you remember me? I had dinner with you Friday night 20 years ago.” One of them, whom I had not seen in 30 years, said “You have a lousy memory!”

The one in the picture was very happy to introduce me to his young children. He spoke about that dinner 20 years ago, and even remembered the subject of our conversation, “About the One.”

He went off to daven (pray) with the bigger boy, leaving me with the two little ones. So what do you think we talked about? I asked the bigger of the two little boys, “Which is greater, one or two?”

     He quickly answered, “Two”

I said, “Don’t be so quick to answer until you know what we are counting. If you are sticks then you would be right. But what if we are counting a pie and its many pieces? Which is greater, the pie or some of its pieces?”

   “The pie” he quickly answered.

“That’s right. You got that quicker than your father did 20 years ago.” Boy, was he happy. I explained, “Since all creation is one, the One is bigger than the many things that are in it.” He understood. “But, obviously, when you are counting the little things that are in the creation, like money or people, then two is surely more than one.”

When his father returned, I asked the boy which was greater, one or two. With a big smile the boy answered, “One!” His father beamed
