A Good Wife…

by Reb Gutman Locks @ Mystical Paths

Just before Pesach I bought a new hat. Buying a hat is not something that you do every day. They are expensive, and they have to be exactly right or you will be unhappy with it for years. Every time you put it on you will say, “I should have gotten the bigger one,” or “the taller one would have been better,” or whatever.

I was in the large hat store in Mea Shearim (ultra-charadie neighborhood) trying to decide which one looked best. I noticed a religious woman in her thirties standing by the side of the doorway. She stood close to the corner so she would not be in the store, but could still see what was going on inside.

“That’s strange,” I thought. A woman, especially a religious woman, standing in the doorway of a men’s hat store in that neighborhood is really unusual. It’s almost like a religious man looking into a women’s pajama store!

When I thought that I had the right hat, I walked over to the counter to pay. I went past a man who was trying on a hat. He turned away from the mirror he was looking in and walked over to the middle of the store. He faced the entrance, straightened up, and looked toward the entrance with a question on his face.

The woman in the doorway looked at him for only a second or two, and then nodded slightly. The man smiled, and walked over to the counter to pay for his new hat.

“A good wife who can find, her value far exceeds that of gems. The heart of her husband trusts in her, he lacks no gain…” [i]
