I explained to them in a way that children could understand that G-d is Infinite, so they should never worship a limited god. Then, I showed them how to pray for their loved ones.
Although we are to help all people, including non-Jews, if a non-Jew’s father is Jewish, we have an additional reason to try to help him.

I could never do your job, Rav Gutman. If the Jewish father can't figure out that maybe he has no right to leave his 3700 year old heritage which over 110 generations that came before him have died for, I can't feel sorry for him. Are we just stupider than we used to be? Is it so difficult to figure this out? He is lacking basic moral sense to abandon what he knows nothing about.
I understand your feelings but don't close the door on someone who is lost. If not by G-d's Mercy many more of us would have been there.
