I previously posted about the 500,000 person march in London protesting budget cuts and reduction in public (free) services, that degenerated into riots and serious destruction (with limited if any police response).
I wrote a bit of political sarcasm noting that England is an occupying power of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland and opening wondering at the difference between these protestors and rebels in Libya – and why isn’t the U.N. declaring a no-fly zone over England and arming the British anti-regime protestors?
Commentor Josh brought us back to some reality in the comments, noting…
An unconfirmed post in the Hadrei Haderim site last night claims that 20 synagogues were vandalized this Shabbat in Stamform Hill, London. Can anyone verify?
I was able to verify some anti-Jewish activity with a contact in England, who reports the following…
1. “Sort of. I received a note last night from MK [Manchester Kosher - an email network affiliated with Edgware Kosher of London] that there had been several burglaries of shuls and Jewish institutions with large items of silver stolen [e.g. Torah breastplates, pointers, silver trays, candelabras].”
2. “Further news. A girl [of about 12] was punched/smacked/hit [reports differ] outside Tesco this afternoon, while the yobbos shouted at her 'Jew'”. (I had to look up ‘yobbos’, it being a bit of British slang that I had never heard before. Wikipedia says it’s “Yobbo or yob is a slang term for an uncouth or thuggish working-class person.”)
While it doesn’t sound like mass targeting of the Jewish community, it does seem that some gratuitous anti-semitism does come to the fore as the “yobbos” and those on the dole (British slang for those living only on government handouts and services) are faced with reductions in their gravy train (American slang for free food service).
