Brothers

by Reb Akiva @ Mystical Paths

My two sons were fighting in the car today, throwing loads of insults back and forth.  I stopped them and said “this is not the way a Jew acts, this is not the way of the Torah.”

My younger son looked at me and said “brothers fighting is definitely from the Torah!  Look at Yitzchok and Yishmael, Yaakov and Easav, and Yosef and all this brothers!  And they didn’t have anything good to say about each other either!”.

Hmmm, he has a point.

And to add to what yaak linked, there's my favorite quote from Rebbe Schneerson, who says like this:

"First there was One. There was no peace, because there was nothing with which to make peace. There was only One.

Then there was Two. There was Plurality. From this point on, an infinite cacophony of conflict extended in all directions and forever.

And on the third day HaShem created peace.

Peace is not homogeneity. Peace does not mean that everyone thinks the same way. Peace is when there is plurality that finds a higher Oneness."

Oneness is the theme that R' Gutman Locks speaks about in his must read book, "There Is One," which one can also listen to on his YouTube account:

Also, Rabbi Dr. Abraham J. Twerski speaks about this need for Oneness and laments that it usually takes an attack from "outside" to bring us together:

From what I've been told, the higher soul of all Jews and Non-Jews were present in Adam Qadmon and Adam HaRishon and their Source is HaKodesh Baruch Hu, therefore, these neshamos are pure and incorruptible.

However, and please correct me if I'm wrong, that aspect of the neshamah that relates to one's "revelation & understanding of the Divine" and one's "spiritual orientation" has been weakened, diminished and brought to a lower madraigah (step/terrace) in the Non-Jew due to a longer period of separation from HaKodesh Baruch Hu, Derech HaShem and a lack of teshuvah and genuine emunah.

Hence, the Non-Jew greatly needs the Jews to shine as ohr l'goyim (a light to the nations). Only the Jews can show the Non-Jews Derech HaShem and thereby lead them out of darkness, but this can't be accomplished if Klal Yisrael engages in intramural disputes and lashon hara. The Jews are the central nervous system within the body of humanity; their role is absolutely critical!

If the watchmen are to busy squabbling amongst themselves to blow the shofar and thereby fail to warn the city dwellers about the approaching danger, then how can they to save themselves? - Yechezchial 33:1-6.

Security is all I've done my whole life and I've seen firsthand what can happen when the guards get distracted and turn against each other and fail to do their job. It ain't pretty and it sets a bad example and endangers everyone!
