Recognize the Jewish State?

image

“US State Department Spokesman Philip J. Crowley reemphasized US commitment to the recognition of Israel as a Jewish state” ????

Umm, what year is it?  Am I missing something here?  Didn’t this happen in 1948?  Or did President Obama take back a U.S. verbal presidential commitment from 62 years ago and is offering it back for a freeze on building in Jerusalem?

He's assumedly distancing the US from the implied EU position:

In response to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's proposal that the Western-backed Palestinian Authority recognize Israel as a "Jewish state" in return for a continued ban on Jewish construction in Judea and Samaria, the European Union said that Israel must assure the rights of all Israeli citizens, both Jewish and non-Jewish.

EU High Representative Spokesperson Maja Kocijancic said the EU supports a solution of "two democratic states, side by side, in peace and security," and that these states must ensure full equality for all citizens, implying that Israel defined as a "Jewish state" would somehow hinder the rights of non-Jewish residents or citizens.

This was actually a smart move by Netanyahu. By proposing that the PA accept the premise of these negotiations, two states for two peoples, in exchange for a building freeze, he put the ball squarely in Abbas's court. He knew that Abbas would never accept this proposal, and the US would be forced to accept its previous 62 year old recognition of Israel as a Jewish State. This ties Obama's hands for 2 or 3 months until something else happens, such as Abbas deciding to unilaterally declare a PA State this summer, something that Obama might instantly recognize. Or there might be another flotilla ...

The possibilities are endless. One thing is certain. Obama believes that his personal salvation is tied up with removing oppression from the Muslim world brought on by Jews living in East Jerusalem, Judea, and Samaria. He spent twenty years in the pews of Rev. Jeremiah Wright's Church learning this and other tenets of liberation theology. He will lose his domestic agenda in three weeks when the Republicans take control of the House of Representatives. He will only have his foreign policy agenda to redeem his presidency. He most assuredly will concentrate on us. American public opinion will be ignored. He is posessed with this need to achieve salvation.
