News reports blare “Israeli held for serial stabbings”, “Israeli-American arrested as serial killer”, “Serial killer caught trying to escape to Israel”.
It’s a little hard to sort through the BLARING BS, but here’s what I can figure out in brief…
Elias Abu El Azam, an Israeli Arab from the town of Ramla, has been living and working in the U.S. legally (and possibly became a citizen). He’s accused of stabbing 16-20 people and killing 5, most or all of them being African-American.
He was arrested in the airport heading to a flight to Israel.
Most of the crimes occurred in Flint, Michigan, an area with a heavy Muslim and Arab immigrant population.
His boss Abdullah Farrah said "He was friendly, He was a nice guy, very polite to all customers including African Americans".
Family members in Ramla said, “We are getting out information from all kinds of rumors about suspicions that do not sound like him. We know him to be a completely different person.”
Ramla is a mixed Arab-Jewish Israeli town just east of Lod in south-central Israel. The majority of the town population would be considered working class poor.
So in today’s climate, if an Arab-Israeli were to be particularly successful, he’d be a Palestinian living in Israel who succeeded. If he was being oppressed, he’d be an Arab minority being oppressed by Israel. But if he stabs somebody, he’s an Israeli.
No bias there.
