We used to dream under the stars and contemplate life as the clouds passed by. We wondered about tomorrow and prayed to G-d that it be well. The days were long, the work was hard, but the mind was free.
Now we school in ordered rows in air conditioned rooms. We travel to work in air conditioned cars with music or talk blaring. We notice the weather only to turn on the car lights or the windshield wipers, a brief interruption only.
We arrive at work and settle in our little cube-space. We look down at our work, starting at a glowing screen under glowing white lights in a noisy climate controlled room. The phone rings, the computer beeps, the A/C hums, the people talk.
Did a cloud pass? Did the stars shine bright? We do not know. For the body is free of the worries of the past, but the mind is shackled.
And G-d? The soft still voice cannot be heard over the din.
