I enjoy Mishpacha magazine, the "Jewish Family Weekly" for the orthodox Jewish community (published out of Israel). Actually, my whole family does. Therefore, the following was somewhat of a major surprise, discovered by my older daughter who had seen the REAL picture published on Chabad.Info. It seems Mishpacha is now joining the famous likes of Reuter's stringers during the Hizbollah war and the Iranian press agency by photoshopping (digitally alterting) news photos...
Dear Mishpacha: (sent via email Motzie Shabbat)
On page 8 and again on page 36 of the 27th of Kislev Chanukah issue, you show a picture of the Chabad shluchim of Washington in the Whitehouse kitchen. However, the photo has been photoshopped (digitally altered) to remove First Lady Laura Bush from the picture. The point of the picture was not some rabbis in the Whitehouse kitchen, but that the wife of the President of the United States specifically ordered that the kitchen be made kosher, and was there to make sure it happened right!
I will not debate Mishpacha's adherence to the extreme chumradic community standard not allowing even a modest photo of a female to grace your pages, though I believe most of your English speaking readers may be surprised to discover this. However, to modify a news photograph removing a person and then provide a caption for the people there is to present a deception, a lie. This photo did not occur, it was an artistic creation of Mishpacha. It is an untrue report of an event.
If Mishpacha is going to hold to an extreme community _chumra_, I would expect them to adhere to an outright statement of the Torah: Stay far from lies. If Mishpacha finds it necessary to present an altered photo, they should note the fact clearly and boldly. In this case the caption should read: "Rabbi's in Whitehouse kitchen with First Lady Mrs. Laura Bush, dressed tzniusly but digitally removed to comply with extreme chumra standards of some of our religious readers avoiding any published image of a female."
Real News Caption: Mrs. Laura Bush poses Monday, Dec. 15, 2008, in the White House kitchen with the rabbis who supervised the kitchen's koshering for the annual Chanukkah party. From left are Rabbi Mendel Minkowitz, Rabbi Binyomin Steinmetz and Rabbi Levi Shemtov.

The Mishpacha caption doesn't even make sense in English after having removed WHO is IN the kitchen.
