Photoshopping at Mishpacha Magazine

Guess what Mishpacha changed?
by Reb Akiva at Mystical Paths

I enjoy Mishpacha magazine, the "Jewish Family Weekly" for the orthodox Jewish community (published out of Israel). Actually, my whole family does. Therefore, the following was somewhat of a major surprise, discovered by my older daughter who had seen the REAL picture published on Chabad.Info. It seems Mishpacha is now joining the famous likes of Reuter's stringers during the Hizbollah war and the Iranian press agency by photoshopping (digitally alterting) news photos...

Dear Mishpacha: (sent via email Motzie Shabbat)

On page 8 and again on page 36 of the 27th of Kislev Chanukah issue, you show a picture of the Chabad shluchim of Washington in the Whitehouse kitchen. However, the photo has been photoshopped (digitally altered) to remove First Lady Laura Bush from the picture. The point of the picture was not some rabbis in the Whitehouse kitchen, but that the wife of the President of the United States specifically ordered that the kitchen be made kosher, and was there to make sure it happened right!

I will not debate Mishpacha's adherence to the extreme chumradic community standard not allowing even a modest photo of a female to grace your pages, though I believe most of your English speaking readers may be surprised to discover this. However, to modify a news photograph removing a person and then provide a caption for the people there is to present a deception, a lie. This photo did not occur, it was an artistic creation of Mishpacha. It is an untrue report of an event.

If Mishpacha is going to hold to an extreme community _chumra_, I would expect them to adhere to an outright statement of the Torah: Stay far from lies. If Mishpacha finds it necessary to present an altered photo, they should note the fact clearly and boldly. In this case the caption should read: "Rabbi's in Whitehouse kitchen with First Lady Mrs. Laura Bush, dressed tzniusly but digitally removed to comply with extreme chumra standards of some of our religious readers avoiding any published image of a female."

Real News Caption: Mrs. Laura Bush poses Monday, Dec. 15, 2008, in the White House kitchen with the rabbis who supervised the kitchen's koshering for the annual Chanukkah party. From left are Rabbi Mendel Minkowitz, Rabbi Binyomin Steinmetz and Rabbi Levi Shemtov.

The Mishpacha caption doesn't even make sense in English after having removed WHO is IN the kitchen.

Thank you for pointing this out. This ultra Charedization of Judaism has to be rejected first and foremost by those of us who hold the Torah dear. If we allow these kind of silly chumras to prevail, we will make a joke of Judaism and the Torah.

It's seriously pathetic and such actions should be mocked publicly.

Dont worry, people laugh at this all the time. What's worse is when Jews stand for doing their best to uphold Torah, and are against the changes made, the non-sensical, they are mocked and hated by the religious who believe they are the gate keepers. I don't blame the sheep, as they are just doing what has been taught to them, but whoa to the leaders. May we get it right.

If you look real close, you can still see some of the red shadow from Laura Bush's dress. It's so.........I can't even comment on it.

Sorry, that reflection on the tin-foiled table in front of the men!

I don't know what the word chumras means so I can't honestly comment on that.

As for photoshopping you're right. It is a deception and a lie. I do know there is something in which lying is considered a form of thought theft and hence a violation of thou shalt not steal.

Feel free to clarify, I might have gotten that wrong.

R' Akiva makes an excellent point. They have every right in the world to hold by their own chumras. Fine.

But don't lie about it! If they would be upfront and straightforward about it I doubt anyone would care one bit.

Frankly, chumrah (strict measure) or not, I wouldn't want to be pictured with this particular woman. Why? Did everyone suddenly forget that the Chilonim (Secular) leadership in Israel and the administration of the grandson of the Nazi supporter Prescott Bush allowed weapons from Egypt to be sent to Abbas's forces!? Do you think this was the ONLY shipment made to Fatah and Hamas that was cleared by Olmert and Bush? Are you that naive? What's going on in Gaza right now and why? WAKE UP! We're all being played! The Chilonim and the Amero-Euro Elites have no love for HaShem or Torah-observant Jews! You think making a kitchen kosher and standing for a photo-op proves that they truly respect Judaism? WAKE UP! Stop supporting these criminals and their agenda!

Anonymous your comments about Pres. Bush are wrong and hate mongering. President Bush is more Zionist than many Israelis. He is a friend to the Jews.

Shiloh said...

Anon 1, you are correct about Bush, anon 2, he is our enemy, a wolf in sheeps clothing, dont kid yourself. Back to number 1, some Chilonim have a distaste for Judaism. Most I know, just have a distaste for religion, but follow thier best the Torah of Moshe. We are being played, it will get ugly soon enough.

I've been wondering lately, if any of this falls into the category of Lashon HaRah. Reb Akiva, can you comment on this? Maybe it would be a good idea to start running a weekly, or twice weekly blog on Lashon HaRah. Also, how important it is to send good reports from Israel, that is if you think the lesson of the ten spies still applies. I know this is a little off topic, and my apologies, but I think sometimes we get a little off base and start talking about the dirty laundry that shouldn't be aired.

INTERESTING::: First the Article... Then the comments...IMO~Truth is Never Lashon harah'
I must be missing something, Like why Mr. Bush and company did in fact try to remove land from the Hebrew people through political maneuvering yet want at the same time to look TOV" in the eyes of the Chabad Reps.

I seem to remember Mr. Bushes father working with the Rebbe some time back that was interesting ploy as well.

Well it will be one of their last meals at the house called white …so let them enjoy it being Kosher…But The AmeriKan Public got ripped off big time and that is not a lie…seven trillion dollars plus went to the illum inate fund. I guess all two hundred million able-bodied overtaxed citizens paid for this farewell dinner.
The best news of the day: Israel hammered Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip on Saturday.
That makes for a great Shabbat IMO,…. Shalom

Shekinah,
We are forbidden to speak truth and untruths about Jews if it leads one to think negatively about whom the informaiton is regarding.

Thanks to Shiloh from Anon 1 and, yes, you're entirely correct. As for Anon (2?) who is concerned about LaShon HaRa (Evil Speaking; Gossip; Slander): I would say that my remarks were more Avak LaShon HaRa (the Dust of Evil Speaking), if anything, rather than being direct slander, especially with regard to Prescott Bush, because his criminal support of the Nazis was exposed in Congressional hearings. As for Olmert, need I defend stating a fact (i.e., that the US/Israeli leadership approved weapons shipments to Abbas (and others)? It was reported on and confirmed! Is it LaShon HaRa to extrapolate the damage done by ALLOWING those (and other) weapons to be laid at the feet of Fatah and Hamas (and others)? Sure there are some nice Chilonim! There are also some nice Xians, too! I'm not talking about them. I'm talking about the CRIMINALS that have been put into power! Why would Bush retroactively have to pardon himself and his administration of all WAR CRIMES if they didn't KNOW that they'd done something criminal? This is just one of many examples I could list. Do a YouTube search for "We Used To Execute People For Waterboarding War Crimes" and listen to Cheney's confession of guilt! I'm wrong? Their lies and criminal activities have been reported on for years! WAKE UP! I'm not selling hatred. I'm advocating that people stop keeping their eyes wide SHUT. Don't kid yourself, because the spirit of the Roman Empire lives on and is still very much calling the shots. The question is: Will history repeat itself or will we ALL learn from the mistakes of OUR past? Only Teshuvah and Tikkun Olam can pave the way for HaGeulah! Supporting the politics of criminals and their agenda is not the answer to our problems. It never has been and it never will be!

I apologize if my comments have offended or incited others wrongly or have been OFF TOPIC, but when I think about Fatah and Hamas being indirectly armed and supported by criminal leaders in the US and Israel, who CONTINUE to create chaos so that they can justify remianing in power and offer the pseudo-solution of more peace talks, that'll only lead to more "land for peace" deals being cut, and when I think about Orthodox and other religious Jews suffering the brunt of such criminal policies, while terrorist rockets continue to fall in their neighborhoods and a new generation of suicide bombers are given fresh reasons to continue hating ALL Jews, I get a little crazy! Maybe I've been listening to way too much of R. Brody and maybe I haven't been listening enough? I don't know.

Re speaking lashon Hara--I'm not sure it is pertinent here or not but I am a crime reporter. I asked a rabbi about the halacha of reporting on crimes in a newspaper. He said it was okay provided that 1. at least three people knew of the crime before it was published and

2. publishing the crime, person's name etc. was went not to shame but for some benefit.

PS: ty to the person who told me what chumras is:)

My question is if Reb Akiva approached the magazine about the photo and what they did about it, if anything? The issue should have been taken to the magazine first and not the internet. I just saw a news report where a Jewish Holocaust survivor lied about the story about meeting his wife. This magazine photo, the story, and Madoff are 3 reasons why an anti-semitic world finds it easier to hate us. Where are our heads? Where are our hearts? Where is our T'shuvah?

Just a thought....

I find that w/ chumras, where do they end? It's not halacha, it's a stringency. So who decides what get's decided. Today, we doctor up a news photo, tomorrow...what? And the religious community is supposed to sit and just swallow whatever is fed blindly? If it's a duck, call it a duck; don't try to fool me.

It's absolutely necessary to make known these things. Naturally, one should be careful of lashon hara, but if people just cry out "lashon hara" b/c a truth was revealed, then who needs truth? Should we just allow these lies to continue?
