Our Response

by Reb Akiva at Mystical Paths

A friend asked, "what is the highest response to such unbelievable cruelty?"

Our natural tendency, which is the nefesh behamious (the animal soul), is to counter anger with anger, and darkness with darkness.

Instead, we must turn to the nefesh elokus (the G-dly soul) and counter darkness with light.

This doesn't mean one shouldn't defend oneself or protect oneself from violence and danger. But we mustn't dwell on marshal abilities, rather we must increase our focus on Torah and mitzvot, shining in good deeds and ahavat yisroel (love of our fellow), redoubling the efforts they tried to crush.

Radical Islam would turn this world into Gehenom (Hell). We must bring down the Shechina (the Divine Presence) and turn it into Gan Eden (the Garden of Eden).

  1. I like this post Reb Akiva. I read a comic when I was young and it had a saying in it that has always stuck in my head. The comic was Powerman and Iron Fist. The quote came from Iron Fist as he was being attacked and speaking to his partner. Iron Fist "You do not fight fire with fire, because any fool knows you fight fire with water"! LOL, wisdom in the strangest places.

  2. Reb Akiva, it is so good to see words of wisdom from a friend and Yes, I agree and am reminded of the words of Psalm 44:23

    כִּי-עָלֶיךָ, הֹרַגְנוּ כָל-הַיּוֹם; נֶחְשַׁבְנוּ, כְּצֹאן טִבְחָה.

And this is in spite of the fact that
    לֹא-נָסוֹג אָחוֹר לִבֵּנוּ; וַתֵּט אֲשֻׁרֵינוּ, מִנִּי אָרְחֶךָ.

We need to trust that all is in His hands and continue to bring light instead of darkness.

  4. Torah mitzvot, yes, yes, yes!! One of them is cleansing the land. How can we justify ripping toilet paper before Shabbat and ignore the heavy Torah commandments. This is an evil heart? I think the oposite is true. We just don't like the truth anymore. Expect our suffering to continue.

  5. and remember the last part of ps. 44:

kuman ezrata lanu ufdenu lma'an chasdecha...arise, assist us, and redeem us for the sake of Your kindness.
