"When you will go out to war against your enemies, and HaShem, your G-d will deliver them into your hand, and you will capture its captivity;"
When you will go out to make war on your yetzer harah, against your tievot (your lusts).
It is curious that the parasha opens with the words "when you will go out to make war against your enemies," then goes on a seeming unrealated list of does and don'ts.
A beautiful woman, (neuv), fristborn's rights (greed), rebellious children, proper burial even for the executed crimmal, lack of concern for others, cross dressing, the sending away of the mother from the nest, a railing around a roof, TZITZIS, slander, adultery, rape, forbidden marriages... In all 31 laws all dealing with out tievot our human lust.
Then "when the camp goes out to war", when the nation is at war we are told we must GUARD AGAINST ANYTHING EVIL. The Jewish army's success is in the hands of G-d whereas other nations rely on superior numbers and weapons, our most potent weapon is righteous behavior.
THIS IS ESPECIALLY IN TIMES OF DANGER, when the satan goes on the offensive. (Rashi) thus the sins that G-d might overlook in ordinary times become significant during times of warfare or our crises. (Ramban) stresses that during times of war (crises) men are under stress and are prone to anti-social behavior. At such times the Torah warns us to be more vigilant than ever not to sink in to evil.
It is at times like these, the time we are now living, we are warned to think and act very carfully, before any action as we dont know how this action will be weighed out for us.
"Remember what Amalek did to you, on the way when you were leaving Mitzraim (Egypt)", remember that as we were leaving our lusts and our sinful behavior behind, Sofek, the strongest weapon they have is DOUBT, doubt came and attacked you from behind. It only came to the rear and to the weaklings, the spiritually weak and those with lack of commitment and focus i.e. defective emmunah, when you where faint and exhusted, when you thought that there was no more zehut (merit), at times like these we all can become overwhelmed with the negative infulence of news and are G-d forbid losing our faith in the One running the world and all its events. For we see it does not take weapons of mass destruction to defeat us, all he has to achieve is to cause doubt only for a second and he's won, our most potent weapon is emmunah (faith) in HaShem."
