Meteors before Tisha B'Av

Just a coincidence of course...NASA reports (here):

Friday, August 12th, before sunrise, meteors. The 2005 Perseid meteor shower.

The Perseids come every year, beginning in late July and stretching into August. Sky watchers outdoors at the right time can see colorful fireballs, occasional outbursts and, almost always, long hours of gracefully streaking meteors. Among the many nights of the shower, there is always one night that is best. This year: August 12th.

Hmmm.

Update: Thanks for link Soccer Dad.

In case it's unclear from the above, the meteor shower continues over a period of a week or more. I'm told it's particularly visible in the hills of the Shomron (West Bank), where there's little light pollution.

This Tisha B'Av, the heavens will be providing fireworks. Let's hope it's for a good reason.

A Hassidic Story - Praying Together

It's a custom to tell stories of tzaddikim (the righteous sages) during melava malka (the post-Shabbos meal). The custom among hassidim is to tell Baal Shem Tov stories or stories of other rebbaim (grand rabbi's)...

Rabbi Zalman Aharon was the eldest son of the Rebbe Maharash, Rabbi Shmuel Schneersohn, the 4th grand rabbi of Lubavitch hassidus. Once asked his uncle, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak, if he recited his prayers betzibbur, "with the community." Rav Yosef Yitzchak answered in the affirmative.

The very next day, however, Rabbi Zalman Aharon noticed that his uncle prolonged his prayers, lingering far longer than any congregation would.

"Didn't you tell me you prayed betzibbur (with the community or with the congregation)?" he asked.

"I do," his uncle replied. "Betzibbur literally means 'with the collective.' After I marshall together the ten components of my soul, I pray."

A Jewish prayer quorum is made up of 10 men. As well, our soul is also made up of 10 attributes.

How Great is Achdus (Unity)?

This week's Mishpacha (translation: family) Magazine in English has a nice midrash on unity:

"Rabbi Yeshosuah of Schnin said in the name of Rabbi Levi, 'Schoolboys in the time of Dovid (king David), as long as they had not tasted sin, used to know how to derive 49 reasons from the Torah [to call an object spiritually] impure and 49 reasons [to call it spiritually] pure. And despite all that, [the Jews] would go out to war and fall in battle, because they spoke against each other.'

'But everyone in Achav's generation served idols, and nonetheless they would go out to war and be victorious, because they did not denounce one another.'"

What can be said? Oy.

Dov and Vendyl

I've written somewhat extensively in the past about Vendyl Jones (here), the researcher and Bnei Noach who believes he's found the likely location of the Aaron Kodesh (Ark of the Covenant). He has quite a story, and a new book out reviewing the whole thing (see his site here).

Reb Dov Bar Leib, from the End of Days blog, has recently spent some time talking to Dr. Jones and found his information not only to be very compelling, but to closely align with his own research on (as his blog is titled) end of days prophecies.

He's strongly recommending support of Dr. Jones, who needs a significant sum of money to begin ground search and excavation to pinpoint and extract the articles (article here.)

It's worth thinking about.

Of course, in a site search I also came across a site that claims the ark is buried in Ireland (and the Irish people are a lost tribe of Israel). Weird.

Space Station Alpha

Current Location - Click Here

I love space travel. It fires the imagination and shows incredible wonders of G-d's universe. It helps us relate to awesome force and power on a scale that we can barely imagine. It also helps us relate to our significance. Perhaps we can't grasp the concept of awe of G-d, but we can look at the measure of the universe and relate to the significance of a single person in light of billions of stars and millions of galaxies. From there, it gives us a perspective to relate even higher.

With concern over the current times (in the world and especially in Israel) and noting how many events seem to be falling into statements of the prophets (as often discussed on this blog as well as on Yeranen Yaakov, End of Days, and Gogumagog.com among many others), I note the coincidence of the timing of the current Space Shuttle mission to Space Station Alpha, terrorist events around the world, the disengagement in Israel, and this statement from the prophet Ovadiah:

(Ovadiah 1:3...) Your heart’s conceit has enticed you.[1] You who makes the skyscrapers[2] your lofty abode, who says to himself: “Who can bring me down to earth?” Even if you lift yourself high like an eagle[3], and even if you establish a space station[4], I will bring you down from there!” says G-d.

Will tragic events in space during this mission prove we are in the last moments of the pre-messianic era according to Jewish tradition?

For more on my take on the holy prophet Ovadiah, see this previous posts, part 1 here, part 2 here.

For those involved in Rabbi Lazer Brody's Perek Shira campaign, the cat says.

[1] Debkafile - article here (bottom) - The Americans are preparing a campaign to coerce Israel into following up its withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and northern West Bank with further evacuations. Washington’s argument is that the trained forces the Sharon government has concentrated to root Israeli communities out of these two territories might as well go straight on to the West Bank and proceed with the removal of unauthorized outposts - and why not some settlements too?

US officials are privately referring to Disengagement B and Disengagement C which would entail the destruction of entire Israeli towns, Maaleh Adumim outside Jerusalem and Ariel further north. To soften up the Israeli government, sanctions have been in force for some months against Israel’s security and military organizations whose performance has begun to show damage. The dispute over the upgrading of Israeli drones sold to China is genuine but also being played to the hilt to push Israel into a corner. In other times and in a different climate of relations, the FBI’s Franklin-AIPAC spy probe would not have gone as far as it has. The Pentagon’s halt on routine supplies of replacement components for Israeli air force warplanes leaves Israel critically vulnerable should a security crisis suddenly flare.

2. Literal translation, ‘mountain caves’. But this is a "Vision" of Ovadiah, so if a prophet 2,500 years ago is seeing New York city but has never seen a building over 3 stories before, how does he describe it?

3. An illusion, a hint, to the national symbol of America?

4. Literal translation ‘even if you place your nest among the stars’. Note the same day Israeli government approved the withdrawal from Gaza, NASA announced a return to space and launch dates [both occuring on Feb. 21, 2005], with the actual launch amazingly being delayed to the 3 Weeks and falling during the disengagement period.

Video: Lubavitcher Rebbe on Giving Away Pieces of Israel

This is a link to a 30 minute video of the Lubavitcher Rebbe (the grand rabbi of chabad hassidus) on the topic of Giving Away Pieces of Israel.

This is a powerful video with clips of the Rebbe speaking about Shleimus Haaretz (keeping the land whole) and the danger of giving up land. The video has five parts: An eternal inheritance to an eternal nation; the Torah forbids giving up land; resisting pressure from the nations; settlements in Yesha; peace and security in our generation.

Echos of the Czar - Taking the Children - Katif Cantonists?

I don't think any news item I've read was more disturbing than this, and if anything recalls the horrors of the past, this is it...

Israel National News:

Child Welfare Services to Take Gaza Children to Shelters
14:10 Jul 27, '05 / 20 Tammuz 5765

At a meeting in Jaffa yesterday (Tuesday), state social workers were informed of the plans by the Ministry of Social Welfare to handle the children of those Jewish families forced to uproot from Gush Katif and northern Samaria. According to the ministry's plans, children over two years old will have to be voluntarily transferred to the custody of a relative, or child welfare services will take the children to specially-prepared shelters. As for children under two years old, the state will allow them to face arrest with their parents, according to the ministry officials who addressed the gathering.

The social workers were asked to volunteer for the work of caring for the uprooted children. It was made clear to them that the work was entirely optional and that only two shelters were being made available for the duration, in the hope that most parents would rather voluntarily sign their children over to relatives.

Upon being informed of the ministry plans, many social workers expressed outrage, with some asking by what legal right can the state remove children from parents who are not considered incompetent. To that question, the official replied, "Ask Prime Minister Sharon, he is the current Welfare Minister...."

For those who know some Jewish history, the Cantonists were Jewish children, boys, taken by the Czar of Russia from their families and forced to serve in the Russian military for 25 years. It was a clear attempt to destroy the Jewish community. So is this!

Good Tongue - Bad Tongue

A nice tidbit from Aish.Com...

If I had been present at Mount Sinai when the Torah was given to Israel, I would have asked God to recreate people so that they had two mouths: one for the expression of the holy words of Torah and prayer, and a second mouth for other matters. But then I reconsidered: if so much lashon hora (bad / evil / slandering speech, literal translation 'bad tongue') can issue from one mouth, imagine how much would issue from two. (Yerushalmi, Brochot, 2, from Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, the author of the Zohar)

Rabbi Chaim of Voloz'hin (the main student of the Gaon of Vilna, Torah leader of his generation as well as being a master kabbalist) employs this analogy to explain the power of the words of Torah and prayer as well. We are accustomed to think that when we pray, we persuade G-d to alter the universe with His own powers; our prayers themselves have no effect in themselves other than to persuade G-d. But Rabbi Chaim explains that this is a mistaken impression. Just as G-d created the universe with words, whatever change takes place in this universe also comes about through words. When our prayers consist of holy words that are able to connect with G-d's creation speeches, G-d takes the words of our prayers themselves and alters the universe into the shape indicated by the prayers.

During this time of year, the 3 weeks, it's an important custom to focus on lashon tov, good speech, being very careful to avoid slander and gossip, and speaking only good of others. How important and good our words can be, or, G-d forbid, the opposite.

Mitzvot - Your Part

From the book HaYom Yom, from Day to Day, a daily dose of hassidic and moral teachings every day, by the 6th grand rabbi of Lubavitch hassidus, from the entry for the 5th and 6st of the Hebrew month of Tamuz...

One of the first grand rabbi (rebbe) of Lubavitch hassidus's great and very close Chassidim had Yechidus, in the course of which the Rebbe inquired after his situation.

The Hassid complained bitterly that his financial situation had utterly deteriorated. The Rebbe responded:

"You are needed to illuminate your environment with Torah and Avoda of the heart - (davening - praying).

Livelihood and what you need - that, G-d must provide for you.

You do what you must, and G-d will do what He must."

This is a common theme discussed in hassidus. You do your part, which means building a vessel to receive blessings, and G-d will do his part, providing the blessings, and you will be able to receive them.

(The effect of) each particular mitzva-act is called forth by (doing) those (other) mitzva-acts which are Makif - general and all-encompassing in nature.

The mitzva of Tzedaka (charity), for example, is one of those all - encompassing - makif Mitzvot, as evident from the reference to all mitzvot by the term "Tzedaka."

For this reason it is most appropriate to give a coin to Tzedaka before performing any Mitzva. This has the effect of bringing the general Makif-aura into the P'nimi, the "inner aspect," (the particular Mitzva).

Nonetheless, this type of Makif is a "close aura," whereas the Makif of Torah is a "distant aura," whose effect is superior.

A mitzva, commonly translated as commandment, is not just us doing what G-d has said in His holy Torah. For this would make us no different from children following their parents instruction. Rather, we are taught, the mitzvot were specifically given to provide us the ability to build a connection, through the physical, with G-d, and direct our lives along the path that He desires. Thus, it extends us to connecting and building a relationship with G-d, exactly through the physical materials and actions of this mundane world (thereby extending the physical itself to holiness).

In the lesson above we see that we can further enhance our mitzvot by tying together general encompassing mitzvot with specific ones. For example, giving charity before prayer, or Torah study of a mitzva followed by it's performance. These enhancements increase the value of our mitzvot and increase our connection to G-d.

The following photo was taken last Tuesday just outside the Holland Tunnel in Jersey City, New Jersey:

Click for Larger View

Since it's pretty blurry (low resolution 640x480), here's what it says and is:

It is: A self-portrait of Vincent Van Gogh (Dutch painter of the 1800's) with an added Keffiyah (Arab male head scarf) on the background of Van Gogh's famous painting Starry Night.

It says: Jihad is Over! If you want it.

I queried a co-worker (from India, non-muslim) what he thought it meant. He replied without thought, "oh, that means if you convert then the jihad is over."

Hmmm. New Jersey, USA.

Anyone every seen anything like this, any other thoughts on what it means?

Teshuva - Return, Reconnect

Repent Oh Ye Sinner!

Nope, that's not our style. T'shuva is the hebrew word that is often translated as repentence. Yet, that's not the point. For that matter, what does 'repent' even mean?

Alternate and more meaningful translations are return and reconnect. One, G-d forbid, has moved away from holiness, has, due to one's actions, become disconnected from G-d. To 'do t'shuva', or to 'repent' is to return, to reconnect in one's relationship with G-d and the holiness that entails.

In kabbalistic terminology, it's noted that in hebrew to return is 't'shuv'. The 'a' at the end is a hebrew letter hey. In other words, t'shuva is to return the hey.
What hey? One of G-d's primary names in hebrew is the tetragramaton, the letters yud, then hey, then vav, then hay. We are taught that every soul is a piece of G-d himself, a spark of divinity. A part of this soul enters the world, usually against it's will, pushed into a material body. Actions of holiness connect it with it's divine source, Torah, mitzvot, bind it. G-d forbid, gross material actions, focusing on the physical pleasures, does the opposite. It builds an iron wall between the soul and it's divine source.

T'shuva breaks the wall and reconnects the soul to it's divine source, it returns the hey (the hebrew letter) to G-d's name.

More on the subject can be seen here: 2 Levels of T'Shuva

An Orange Torah Code?

Yeranen Yaakov has up an awesome Torah Code, that says:

מצור כתום יבלום מאויי ממשל
"A siege of orange will stop the desires of the government"

The words מצור כתום ("siege of orange") appears once in the Torah at an interval of 1390 letters (spanning many Parshiot and even 2 books of the Torah). That same sequence continues to produce יבלום מאויי ("will stop the desires of"). The word ממשל ("government") crosses the sequence with an interval of 5.

Rambings and More on the significance of Orange

I'm a little burned out on the political situation at the moment. A lot could be said, and is being said on many other blogs and news reports, about the murders of a husband and wife leaving Gaza (I'd say they're just dying for us to leave, but it seems it's us doing the dying), about the capture of 2 homicide bombers on the way to do their evil tasks exactly while the U.S. Secretary of State was 'coordinating' the peace, and about the government of Israel sitting on it's hands while it's people die.

This situation are so crazy, insane, and truly suicidal that it cleary shows the orchestration from above. Ribono Shel Olam, Master of the Universe, must it be so painful???

Oh, not to forget the bombing of the formerly Israeli but now Egyptian tourist site of Sharm el Sheik. At first I suspected this was another European oriented attack, as it's a major inexpensive but beautiful tourist location for European tourists. But the bombings seem to have targeted facilities catering to Egyptian and Arab tourists. Not sure why their bombing the countries that support and fund them. Again, a situation that is absolutely bonkers.

On another topic, two weeks ago (in this post) I noted that...

Inner.Org notes that each Hebrew month has an associated divine attribute and a representative color. Tonight is the beginning of the Hebrew month of Tammuz, which has the related color of orange.

In a new reference to the color orange, the End Of Days blog notes (full post here):

...the color orange is the color of Yesod, the sixth sefirah, the color associated with the rise of Mashiach ben Yosef. Yosef as the securer of Egyptian prosperity over 3500 years ago did not secure its prosperity at the expense of Truth. Mashiach ben Yosef, his scion, will be no different in this vein.

For those unaware, the color orange is the sign of the anti-disengagement movement in Israel. There are no coincidences.

A Baal Shem Tov Story - Hassidic Joy

It's a custom to tell stories of tzaddikim (the righteous sages) during melava malka (the post-Shabbos meal). The custom among hassidim is to tell Baal Shem Tov stories, or stories of other rebbaim (grand rabbi's).

So, here is a Baal Shem Tov story. Many miraculous stories are told about the saintly Baal Shem Tov (literally the Master of the Good Name), who brought the path of hassidus, great insights into kabbalah, and hope to a generation of embattled Jews (teaching that every soul has a immeasurable and special value and every person should be treasured). Are all the miraculous stories the literal truth? Of course not. But could they be, with such a saintly man, literally yes...

The fervent singing and dancing of the Baal Shem Tov's disciples was frowned on by the drier, more conventional Torah scholars, who criticized what they perceived as his and his disciples' improper conduct. These critics once asked him why his disciples and followers were so excessively joyful and danced so frequently, seemingly at every opportunity. The Baal Shem Tov answered them with a parable, saying:

"Once, a skilled and talented fiddler stood in the street playing in an ecstasy of passion and feeling. A crowd gathered around him to listen, and they were so charmed by the beauty and sweetness of his music that they began to dance, lost to the world.

A deaf man happened to pass by, and unable to hear the ravishing music, he was utterly astonished by the bizarre scene before his eyes. Since he could not fathom why the people were dancing, he was certain that they were actually madmen!"

"That is the way it is with my disciples and followers," said the Baal Shem Tov. "They hear and see the song that emanates from each and every thing that G-d, blessed be He, has created. If so, how can they keep from dancing?"

Why All The Small Actions?

Many wonder, why is Judaism so minutely involved in all the little details of life, all the personal actions? Aish.Com had this nice entry (from the Jewish Ethicist)...

Jewish tradition, with its strong emphasis on concrete practice rather than abstract faith, is particularly insistent on the need to choose habits and an environment that are conducive to human growth. One of the most famous statements of this is the explanation in the classic Sefer Hachinukh (THe Book of Mitzvah Education) that practical commandments are necessary because "the heart is drawn after the actions." Rather than commanding a particularly sentiment or character trait, the Torah influences us by accustoming us to acts and experiences which will in turn cultivate an enlightened outlook.

My response, it's a horrible thing for innocent people to get bombed. Not sure why the mayor of London doesn't realize that, hope he and his government do sometime soon.

I've Been Evacuated

My work location has been evacuated (New York area) due to a package left on a bus sitting out front. Full bomb response crew on site.

But, in the words of London's mayor, that's ok, I understand the feelings of the attackers, having an urgent need to destroy but only having a limited abilities, they must express themselves thus and we must understand it.

Update: The police on site have said it was a hoax. Not sure if this means it was a fake bomb or just a forgotten package. Perhaps this will lead to a return of the machine-gun (M16) armed police and road blocks of my work district that were taken down some months ago. No, I'm not talking about Israel, I'm talking about the New York area.

Updates: Is it all lies? 20,000 or 80,000? More come, or go? Food in abundance, or blocked?

WorldNetDaily has news a bit different than the Main Stream Media, though news from IsraelReporter is similar (article here):

Israeli VIPs, including rabbinic authorities, plan to serve as human shields in an effort by tens of thousands of protesters to breach a massive force of police officers and soldiers blocking their way to Gaza, sources told WorldNetDaily.
...
This afternoon, the estimated crowd of 50,000 camped at Kfar Meimon – a small farm community about 15 miles south of the entrance to the Jewish communities in Gaza – appeared to be down by about half.

But that's because able-bodied protesters from age 15 to 30 are being mobilized at another location to spearhead a breach of the security line that would allow the rest to march to Gaza.

Yesterday morning, the massive group found themselves completely surrounded by security forces pledging to halt the march. Police entered Kfar Meimon and announced on loudspeakers buses had been brought in to take home protesters wishing to leave. No one budged.

Instead, about 2,000 more protesters made it past heavy roadblocks, many traveling by foot, and joined the besieged masses, who pledged to march on.

Police told media they estimate the crowd to be 20,000, but march leaders say it is closer to 80,000. Indeed, a tour of Kfar Maimon puts the numbers closer to the leaders' estimates.
...
There were reports police were denying entry to the area of food or water trucks, but dozens of large water tanks were indeed situated inside and protesters were provided with ample food.

Many Meimon residents gave out fruits and vegetables.

On site reports versus MSM are night and day. Example, Associated Press headline, "Gaza Withdrawal Opponents Admit Defeat".

Soldiers and policeman are standing outside the village, encircling the fence in a double human chain and preventing them from leaving.

(in addition) Many more protesters are making their way south towards Kfar Maimon and other important junctions in their efforts to enter Gush Katif.

The Spiritual Side of the Struggle

While I've been going on, at extreme length, over the last 2 days about the physical side of the struggle in Israel, it's not only important but absolutely critical to keep in mind the spiritual side of this struggle.

The Ongoing Prayer Campaign

Rav Mordechai Eliyahu (the saintly and righteous former chief sepharidic rabbi of Israel), recommends saying the following kipitilak of tehillim (numbered psalms) daily: 120-124, 130, 140

Rabbi Lazer Brody is leading a very special prayer campaign, the saying Perek Shira for 40 consecutive days. Perek Shira is a mystical text of 84 elements of the world praising G-d and teaching lessons. Rabbi Brody's comments and instructions here, and here is a link to Perek Shira in English and Hebrew.

The Depth of The Process

Yiddishkeit.Org has posted a review by the 2nd grand rabbi of Chabad chassidus on the moments before Moshiach, "Explaining the reasons for the period of "birthpangs" which preceed the coming of Moshiach".

YeranenYaakov has up a translation from LeDavid.Net, "Achdus (unity) from the current problems is a major step in bringing Moshiach".

Changing Opinions

Haaretz left-wing reporter changes to anti-disengagement supporter.

Mirty (of Mirty's Place) has changed her mind about disengagement.

On Site Report versus Media Reports - Media Bias of the Israeli Protest March

Via WorldNetDaily (click here for original)...

Tired officers rest as protesters march on - (WND photo)

Numbers:

Earlier this evening, tens of thousands streamed into Nativot, a town about 20 miles south of Gaza, holding a massive rally that completely filled a dirt field police estimate could hold about 40,000 people. A second adjacent field that could hold about 30,000 was nearly filled and a line of protesters could be seen walking to the rally from a quarter mile away.
...
The Israeli media also reported the number at today's rally to be 40,000, but that estimate was taken before many reached the area.

Agreement to Move On? I Think Not:

The marchers encountered heavy roadblocks forcing them off the road onto empty fields, where they were greeted by a massive force of about 10,000 Israeli soldiers and police officers.

The security forces formed a human chain that blocked the marchers into a large area on the field.

Undeterred, the protesters sang songs, danced and chanted anti-withdrawal slogans. Some formed circles on the dirt field and played guitars and banjos they had brought.
...
After about an hour and a half, the crowd started chanting slogans louder and louder. The section at the front counted down from three, then charged through the human barrier the officers had formed, breaking free and running into the fields.

Police commanders charged through the field in vehicles, yelling on loudspeakers for officers to head the marchers off further on the fields before the protesters reached nearby Highway 25.

But the officers were powerless, unable to stop the slew of marchers who made it to the road after running across a section on the side of the field full of long weeds and thorns.

Singing victory songs, the marchers walked along the road and waved "goodbye" to the police officers, many of whom were quickly bussed from the scene.

False Media Reports?

Several Israeli media outlets reported a deal had been struck that allowed the marchers to reach their resting area on condition they don't march to Gush Katif.

A senior leader of the Yesha Council, which organizes the march, told WND, "That is utter rubbish. The cameras recorded what happened. The police were overwhelmed. They were defeated. That's the only reason we continued. Our spirits are high and cannot be deterred. We will march on to our besieged brothers in Gush Katif."

The leader said the number of marchers would have been higher if police had not stopped protest vehicles reaching the area.

Police established roadblocks in several places in the West Bank, Jerusalem and Tel Aviv to halt protesters before they neared the march's start-point.

The new Gush Katif Anti-Disengagement Sefer Torah (holy Torah scroll) was prepared over months and completed last week in Crown Heights, Brooklyn (worldwide headquarters of Chabad Lubavitch hassidus) on Gimmel Tammuz (the 3rd of the hebrew month of Tammuz), the day of elevation of the Lubavitcher Rebbe (the day of the passing of the grand rabbi of Chabad hassidus).

The rally and march are therefore a holy occasion, a Hachnosas Sefer Torah, a welcoming of a Sefer Torah, the holy Torah scroll. The article reports:

The Sefer Torah written by the Campaign to Save the Nation and the Land is being brought to Gush Katif together with the march of thousands. The Sefer Torah leads the march, and rabbanim and community activists take turns holding the Torah. As Knesset Member Uri Ariel described the march: "The protestors are not tussling with soldiers or police; they are dancing and singing, holding a Sefer Torah. There is no precedent for this in history."

First Hand Account of Being Mortar'd

(Pointed out by Yeranen Yaakov)

Please, read the whole thing here (click here). A poignant excerpt below...

Maybe I’m dumb. But I just don’t get it. Why are they still shelling us? The explanation has always been because we’re in their territory. We’ve moved into their homes and they want us to get out, so they try to kill us. But we’re freaken LEAVING. The government has decided to evacuate every single Jew by force from the entire Gaza strip. SO WHY DO THEY STILL WANT TO KILL US? What explanation can be provided now? Since Thursday night, the shelling has not let up. We came home at 2:00 a.m. to find our guests at the kitchen table, pale and frightened. The woman had awakened to the sound of nearby explosions. We explained that it was nothing, that they were always sending mortars, that the roof of the house was reinforced and protected.

Yes, yes, it’s all fine and dandy. All Friday, there were announcements on the community loudspeakers. “Everyone is to stay indoors. Make sure to stay in protected rooms.” Then 45 minutes later, the all-clear “Back to routine,” would be announced, and you would hear explosions around you as they were saying it. Our guests fled to Shirat Hayam, a nearby tiny settlement on the beach; the kids were frightened by the “firecrackers” and the wife just couldn’t get herself together. But I was cool as a cucumber.

I was walking down the street to do laundry, on the phone with Eli who had gone with the mitzvah tank to army bases half an hour away, and a car was behind me broadcasting the “Get Shelter” message. I would have ignored it. But Eli shouted at me to run, run straight to the closest building, the Beis Medrash, next door to my house. I was taking it easy but Eli was freaking out at me, pleading, “I don’t hear you rushing. Hurry, run, please!”

I heard the mortars falling around me. But what’s the big deal? This is life in Gush Katif. I remembered my reaction to the first close mortar I heard, just 3 days ago. Wow, how quickly one gets use to danger. So this is how kids learn to live under fire.

With Eli still begging on the line, I enter the Beis Medrash. I close the door, sit down. I look out the window. I hear an explosion. I see clouds of smoke and debris rising from my house, not ten feet away. Cool as a cucumber.

Later, Eli comes back with the guys and they are all excited. Everyone’s taking pictures, congratulating me. The Rabbi and his wife come over to make sure we’re okay. She kisses me on the cheek, “Baruch Hashem, Baruch Hashem.” We are all milling about outside, enjoying the warm sun, the crisp breeze. It is such a beautiful day.
...
...And I say, What’s the big deal? So a couple of shingles cracked. These mortars are nothing.

But they're not nothing. Thursday night, a 22 year old woman was sitting outside with her boyfriend. She's dead. He's critically injured.

And why? Why do the Arabs in Chanyunas, a village not half a kilometer from my house, spend their time trying to hurt us? Bile rises in my throat as I think about the liberal response I would give a month ago. They’ve proven us wrong; the shelling now can have no political purpose, no practical aim...

News Report: Both sides ready to cross lines and trample norms

When Haaretz, a very left wing government supporting anti-religious Israeli newspaper starts writing like this, it's time to pay serious attention (original article here):

By Ari Shavit - Haaretz Correspondent : The battle for Israeli sovereignty is taking place in the fields on the way to Kfar Maimon in the south of the country.

They stood in long lines, the youths of the rule of law and the youths of total belief. One was silent and scared, the other was pressuring for refusal. One was idle, the other was calling out, "Jews don't banish Jews."

At 9:30 P.M., Border Police officers stopped the orange march, two kilometers from Netivot. Was there really a need? Was it right to use Israel Defense Forces soldiers to stop a civilian rally inside sovereign Israeli territory?

At 10:30 P.M., none of this mattered. The dynamics of arbitrariness on the one hand and unsupervised rebellion on the other had taken their toll. Spread out on the yellow fields was a sight that looked like it came out of pictures of wars in the Middle Ages. There were long lines of police officers and soldiers and Border Police officers, and there were masses of religious warriors. And the cry echoing into the night: Soldier, police officer - refuse orders. Soldier, police officer - refuse orders.

Will Israel survive this summer? One would assume so. But the first evening of the struggle between disengagement and those who don't want it was very worrying. It exposed unqualified readiness on both sides to trample norms, to cross lines. If the national behavior and the settlers' behavior don't settle down, they could transform the evacuation of Gush Katif into an unprecedented trauma of identity.

It already is, the battle of Eretz HaKodesh, the Holy Land, Eretz Yisroel, the Land of Israel, versus Medinat Yisroel, the Israeli State, is now in full force. The spiritual future or secular future is now being decided.

If you can't join in physically (or support those who are), join in spiritually (even if you can join in physically, join in spiritually also!)...

According to Rav Mordechai Eliyahu (the saintly and righteous former chief sepharidic rabbi of Israel), the following kipitilak of tehillim (numbered psalms) should be said (daily):

120-124, 130, 140

Rabbi Lazer Brody (from the Lazer Beams blog) is leading another avenue of spiritual attack.

Rabbi Brody's method is saying Perek Shira daily for 40 consecutive days. Perek Shira is a mystical text of 84 elements of the world praising G-d and teaching lessons. Rabbi Brody's comments and instructions here, and here is a link to Perek Shira in English and Hebrew.

Opinion Counterpoint: That's Not Extremism

Daniel Lubetzky at YNetNews wrote:

We need to stop extremists first and now, before their bitter hatred envelops us all. Know they plot and fight for a delusional vision that will impact your future and that of your progeny...

Palestinian militant groups seek to torpedo efforts at reconciliation through terror, and as such, they have an unwitting and unholy alliance with militant Israeli “thugs” (as Prime Minister Ariel Sharon called them).

The actions of a radical minority of violent settlers should also infuriate us all. They went on a wild rampage in the village of Muasi, rioting, bullying and attacking young Palestinians. They blocked Israeli highways and threw nails and gasoline into the roads.

Mr. Lubetzky writes about Israeli extremists. Like the ones that blow up hospitals, bus stations, train stations, malls in my hometown of Netanya, groups of girls, oh wait, that's the Palestinians.

What's with those Jewish extremists? They....they blocked a road!!! The interrupted the flow of traffic! They made me miss my favorite TV show!

Death, destruction, brutal terror, complete lack of humanity DO NOT equal feeling strongly enough about your cause to inconvienence others.

Dear Mr. Lubetzky, you yourself state that 89% of the Palestinian population supports HOMICIDE ATTACKS on innocent men, women and children. How much of the Israeli population supports the torture and murder of Palestinian men, woman, and children?

Your equivalent argument is a joke.

News Flash: Early Protest Reports In - Massive

IsraelReporter.com reports:

Police/Army sources placed the early protest count at 89,000. Later reports now say 120,000+, with continued reports of additional massive numbers on the way that have been blocked or delayed by police (and then choosing alternative routes).

More on the way.

IsraelReporter:

EXCLUSIVE & URGENT REPORT: JULY 18, 19:56 Israel Time

This is Shlomo Wollins reporting live from Gush Katif. The people of Israel are talking with their feet and expressing their outrage at the "disengagement" in general and the attempt by Israel to squash the rally in Netivot and the subsequent march to Gush Katif. I have first-hand, reliable and confirmed report that over 120,000 people have already entered Netivot in a veritable "sea of orange", with tens of thousands more in route. The most optimistic estimates of the rally may be only half of the rally's eventual size. In addition, the majority are equipped to join the historic march into Gush Katif where 20,000+ Israeli police/army will attempt to block the entrance of the throng, either tomorrow afternoon, night, or the following morning.

Can the Israeli government face down potentially 5% of it's population?

2nd Grand Rabbi Visits Gush Katif

Chabad.Info reports: Yesterday, the Biale Rebbe (grand rabbi of Biale hassidus) visited Gush Katif, met with residents and even gave a blessing for the seedlings recently planted in the Ganei Tal hothouses.

The Biala Rebbe is the second Rebbe to visit Gush Katif in recent days, following a visit by the Bostoner Rebbe. In his talk with residents, he told them that he is proud of them; that they are sanctifying Hashem's name every day and every moment. "You are making a crown for Hashem - with the most difficult mitzvos. You are learning Torah and settling the land, even though it's difficult.

Ladaat.net reports that other Rebbes are considering a visit to Gush Katif in the upcoming days.

News Flash: Suicide Bomber Film Dropped!

AP-LONDON — Organizers of the Cambridge Film Festival said yesterday they decided not to screen the film "Paradise Now", a prize-winning film about two suicide bombers, out of deference to victims of the London bombings.

"Paradise Now", directed by Hany Abu-Assad, tells the story of two Palestinian men recruited as suicide bombers who are intercepted at the Israeli border and have their attack uncovered. It was voted best European film at the Berlin Film Festival in February.

In a statement, the Cambridge Film Festival said the decision was made after consulting with local authorities and police, and in response to "the recent tragic events and the sensitivities involved." Organizers said tickets for the screenings yesterday and today would be refunded and another film shown instead.

Yes ladies and gentlemen, this is for real. The best European film of the year glorifies suicide bombers.

The film was not dropped because it's completely insane, violates all Western society morals and ethics, or because it encourages activity which destroy's societies and lives, but because some people (those would be the ones that had their famlies and lives destroyed by evil) might be a little sensitive.

Am I the only one that sees a problem with this?

Moves for Gaza: In Israel - Religious Sector Engages

In Israel for this Monday, a call has been issued to Chabad hassidim to join the march to Gush Katif. Most Chabad rabbi's in Israel, in line with the writings and speeches of the Lubavitcher Rebbe in the past, strongly support Gush Katif and efforts to preserve the land of Israel (click the poster for more info):

Yeranen Yaakov has up a translation from Ledavid.net, which states that leading Sephardic rabbi's have weighed in:

In an urgent letter that was distributed today in many synagogues, the former chief rabbis - Harav Hagaon Avraham Shapira Shlit"a and Harav Hagaon, the Rishon Letzion Rav Mordechai Eliyahu Shlit"a - call upon the public to come and join them in the "Engagement March" which will take place this coming Monday. On the letter which was signed by the rabbis Shlit"a, it says:

Unfortunately, the Israeli Government has decided to expel thousands of Israelis - complete families, men, women, and children - from their homes and land, in which they lived for about 3 generations. This decision is against Halacha, justice, and human dignity, which a comparable thing has never been done before. It is incumbant upon all of us to strengthen ourselves with strength to help and encourage [the Gush Katif residents] and to prevent their expulsion. It is not a time to be silent העת לכם אתם לשבת בבתיכם ספונים והבית הזה חרב Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your cieled houses, while this house lieth waste? We are all called to be ready, armed to go, for the sake of our mighty brothers, ye mighty in strength, that fulfil His word.

We call upon all our Jewish brothers to join us and to join our mighty brothers in Gush Katif, to remove the siege, to cancel the expulsion, and to raise up families for settlement in the area. We call upon all our brothers to unite, to focus our efforts and to work with all their strength to the success of the project, and it is incumbant upon all of us during these days to focus only on this project to cancel this horrible decree. We should strenghten ourselves with prayer in abundance, and prayer from the depths of the heart, that the gates of Heaven should be split open, and that Hashem should cancel from us all evil decrees. עת צרה היא ליעקב וממנה ניוושע and it is a time of trouble unto Jacob, but out of it shall we be saved. We call upon the public to say Tehillim chapter 121 after every prayer, until the decree is nullified.

חזק ונתחזק בעד עמנו ובעד ערי אלוקינו Be of good courage, and let us prove strong for our people, and for the cities of our G-d

--- A Ladaat.net reporter notes that Admorim and additional rabbis are expected to provide their opinion as דעת תורה to join in the "Engagement March".

Music: Mystical Breslov Music

TikunCD

This music is a mystical meditative Jewish kabbalistic music with the prayers of Breslov Hassidus, Tikun Klali, prayers by the grand rabbi, Rabbi Nachman of Breslov. (lower quality sample - 56k mp3) Soon (after Tisha B'Av, G-d willing) to be offered for sale via CD in the U.S. and worldwide via this blog, with profits benefiting charity.

Click to Listen to the Sample

By Erez Yechiel, Tikun Klali by Rabbi Nachman of Breslov prayed via a Special Melody.

Just to avoid any confusion, the prayer is written by Rabbi Nachman of Bresolv, the first and only grand rabbi of Breslov hassidus. The music and singing is by Mr. Yechiel.

This prayer is a kabbalistic tikkun, a powerful 'repairing' prayer, and comprises and introductory prayer, 10 specially selected psalms in a special order, and a concluding prayer. On another occasion I'll delve more into this particular prayer. The power of this tikun is through the personal preparation and praying of it, the CD is only nice inspiring music.

IsraelReporter - Success or Failure comes on the 18th...

IsraelReporter, reporting from inside the closed-off Gush Katif, says (article here)...

This is Shlomo Wollins reporting live from the Gaza Strip at 3:33am early on July 14th...Despite the military closure at the main junctions into Gush Katif, well-known activist & radio show host Avi Hyman and Nachum Boudilovsky have successful travelled from Tel Aviv to Neve Dekalim. The method was a train from Tel Aviv to Kiryat Gat, a hitchhike to Tzomet Plugot, a hitchhike to Ashkelon, and then a final hitchhike through Kissufim crossing with a resident of Gush Katif returning home.

At the crossing, the driver showed his drivers’ license with a Gush Katif proof of residence and was able to transport Avi & Nachum directly into the heart of Gush Katif. Having received countless calls today on my mobile phone as to the possibility of “penetrating” the military closure of Gush Katif, we now see that it is possible. It is logical to conclude that penetrating the Kissufim crossing will become significantly harder over the next few days leading up to the march on the 18th...

Sharon's entire future rests upon this disengagement folly and he is clearly willing to lead the country to civil war to complete his ambitions. It has boiled down to this: if only 20,000 march on July 18th it will mean the end of Gush Katif; if 50,000 march then the future is uncertain; and if 100,000 march then it will signal the tactical impossibility of disengagement and result in the immediate and complete collapse of Sharon political future.

A Groan

From the book HaYom Yom, from Day to Day, a daily dose of hassidic and moral teachings every day, by the 6th grand rabbi of Lubavitch hassidus, from the entry for the 3rd of the Hebrew month of Tamuz...

(The Rebbe writes) My grandfather said: "A Jewish groan which, G-d forbid, arises from physical misfortune, is also a great Teshuva (repentence / reconnection to G-d); how much more so then, is a groan arising from spiritual distress a lofty and effective Teshuva.

The groan pulls him out of the depths of evil and places him on a firm footing in the realm of good.

Recognizing one's bad straights, knowing one must turn to one's Creator, is already a great step in improvement. Note, this is not a moan, as in bemoaning one's fate, this is a groan, recognizing where you are and that it's not a good place (or as good a place as it could be), and wanting it to be better. Stand up and take the next step!

Somebody Notices

It's a good thing somebody notices, unfortunately somehow it's not the U.S. or British governments...

...here's what President Bush said about supporting Palestinian terrorists in a February 2003 speech justifying the war in Iraq.

--> Success in Iraq could also begin a new stage for Middle Eastern peace, and set in motion progress towards a truly democratic Palestinian state. The passing of Saddam Hussein's regime will deprive terrorist networks of a wealthy patron that pays for terrorist training, and offers rewards to families of suicide bombers. And other regimes will be given a clear warning that support for terror will not be tolerated.
Without this outside support for terrorism, Palestinians who are working for reform and long for democracy will be in a better position to choose new leaders. True leaders who strive for peace; true leaders who faithfully serve the people. A Palestinian state must be a reformed and peaceful state that abandons forever the use of terror.

President Bush was right about deposing Saddam; it stopped one form of financial support for Palestinian terrorist groups. Yet despite the fact that both Saddam and Arafat are gone, the new Palestinian leaders are still harboring terrorists, and a terrorist group is gaining political power. If "support for terror will not be tolerated," how can Bush reconcile that with the G-8's "wealthy patron" support for the PA? He can't, which is shameful.

News Background: Netanya, and Making a Homicide Vest, Photos, Video

For some background on today's news of a homicide attack on innocent girls in Netanya, Israel, here's some information and photos from Netanya, and a link to a video on Making a Homicide Vest.

Netanya, Israel is a small-sized Israeli city midway between Tel Aviv and Haifa, on the sea. Local industry includes electronics and software research, soft drink and beer production, and ocean resort tourism.

During the months of July and August, Netanya is heavily visited by French tourists. Netanya, while not a particularly religiously oriented city, has a large number (hundreds) of synogogues and religious schools for all ages. It is also the world headquarters of the Tzanz / Klausenberger hassidim, as well as Laniado Hospital (built and funded by the hassidim for all who need).

Netanya is the site of a college and the famous Ulpan Akiva (language school). The beaches in Netanya are quite beautiful, and include a special orthodox religious beach (with separate hours for men and women). As entry to the beaches is via a cliff face, Netanya is also known for para-sailing, with parachutists leaping off the cliff face into a steady updraft. It's a site to see.

Netanya is on the coast, yet is only 9 miles away from the 'West Bank' and the 'Palestinian' town of Tulkarm. It has been the frequent site of horrific homicide bombing attacks.

The Mystery Grows - US Base in Central Israel?

I previously posted, with pictures, about a large base going up in central Israel under a U.S. flag (click here).

A quick Google search turned up a 2001 article about a bid for the base (click here), and a conspiracy site article with more photos and info (of course, it's a conspiracy site, so take the info appropriately)...

Speculation says this site will be:

1. A forward positioning supply base for the U.S. military.
2. A major electronic surveillance post for the U.S. C.I.A. (Central Intelligence).
3. Missle silo's, associated supplies and cover.
4. All the above.

A few notes that I didn't make last time. My original picture link includes a sign (in Hebrew) listing the construction companies and managers involved. It's primarily an Arab construction team (which makes it unlikely it's for use by the Israeli army) with U.S. management.

Here's a few of the pictures, old ones and new ones (see my previous post - here - for more info also...

Note the last picture, underground entry?

Here's the full picture links I have so far:

Not to be overly conspiritorial, my speculation, given the formation of the 'warehouses' (no external windows) together with the stated U.S. military policy of reducing overseas bases, creating more rapid deployment forces, and pre-positioning (forward positioning) supplies, is that this is a U.S. rapid deployment forward supply base for the Middle East. Not associated in any way with the defense of Israel but rather a quick weapons and supply pickup point for U.S. forces on fast deployment to other Middle East situations.

Question: Kabbalah makes me dizzy.

A kind reader sent a note, which included this (edited for anonimity):

I have read some of the beginner kabbalah stuff that reliable sources said was kosher and found it confusing. And although it feels a little funny admitting this, I didn't feel well spiritually and mentally after reading it, so I stopped right away. I concluded that it was way out of my league and that I'd better just ask my source to explain it to me if I had a question about reincarnation or whatever. I just bring this up to say I'd encourage you to ask my source what he thinks. And then put his response up on your fine site!

This brought up two points I wanted to comment upon. The first is kabbalah sources and reliable stuff. As I've previously posted about, there's a huge amount of cow poo poo relating to kabbalah floating around the web. Not only is there inaccurate info, but there's very seriously spiritually misleading info. Be very careful in selecting your sources.

Then, even if you've selected an excellent, reliable and kosher source, not every lesson or teacher is right for you, and in some cases it just may not be an area that you're ready to grasp. This is not, G-d forbid, an insult to anyone's abilities, but rather a proper recognition of one's spiritual standing. If you haven't prepared and trained, you can't run a marathon, and trying to do so might even be deadly.

There's a story told about the great Jewish sage, Rabbi Yosef Karo, zt"l. Rabbi Karo is also known as the Mechaber, literally 'the author', as he is the author of one of the greatest Jewish religious works, The Shulhan Aruk, the complete codification of all Jewish religious law. Rabbi Karo lived in the city of Tzfat (or Safed) in Israel, and he lived there during the same time as Rabbi Yitzchok Luria, zt"l, the holy Ari, the master mystic and master of Kabbalah, who created the system of Lurianic kabbalah.

The story says that Rabbi Karo, the greatest Jewish sage of Jewish religious law, went to Rabbi Luria, the greatest Jewish sage of kabbalah and mysticism, and asked to begin learning with him the deepest mystical secrets that he didn't already know. Rabbi Luria agreed and they set a time for their learning sessions. They got together and Rabbi Luria began teaching, after a few minutes Rabbi Karo fell asleep. This is a sage who spent years working through the night preparing his incredible publication. Rabbi Luria awakened him and they began again. Again Rabbi Karo fell asleep. After this happenened a number of times and through a number of sessions, Rabbi Luria told Rabbi Karo, "it seems your soul is not enabled to learn this material, continue to focus on that which your soul excels beyond all others."

Different people have different abilities, we have the responsibility to make the best of our abilities that we can, but not to be what we are not. If mysticism is not for you, don't try to force it.

The second point was regarding asking different sources. Judaism is currently decentralized. This means, there is no formal worldwide religious structure. There are sects, sub-sects, and communities. Within each there are different organizational structures. Generally within the orthodox Jewish world, the greatest scholars and sages rise to their positions by being recognized from within the crowd for their exceptional abilities and holiness.

Generally, I direct questions I have to my rabbi and/or sages and scholars within my sub-sect. In certain specialized cases, I may attempt to direct a question to certain great scholars that specialize in particular areas. (I've never had a question worthy of going to the greatest sages of the generation.)

Your source is a special and worthy person who I respect, but not someone to whom I direct those types of questions.

Join the Spiritual Battle

I've posted quite a bit about the physical disengagement battle and those who are working hard to prevent it. But, what about the spiritual battle? This is, in many ways, the more important of the two.

Multiple Secret U.S. Bases / Camps in Central Israel???

The following pictures and story are going up on the 'net, with the question being, what is it? Why is a large U.S. flagged camp, one of many we're told, being built in central Israel???:

[Edited] "I detoured off Rd 444 (not 443) between Elad and Shoham and drove towards the Halamish Bet Aryeh. About 2.5 KM I came upon the camp. The camp is right near the road, it's clearly visible to anyone using this particular road to and from the Shomron as far as Bir Zeit and Ramalah. The sign at the turn off reads Nachshonim (a near by kibbuts between Elad and Rosh Ha'ayin).

I drove up to the gate. There is an American flag alongside two Israeli flags. When stopped, I said to the guard that I thought this was a shortcut to Nachshonim. He said that it was a base named Nachshonim but there is no road to the kibbutz. He told me it was a construction site and that I could not enter. I left and drove another KM or so on the road. Just past the Machsom I turned left on to a dirt road which doesn't ring the camp but seems to be the road along where the security fence is being constructed. No doubt much of the road is being blasted out of the rock - so is every other road in the area especially the roads that are associated with the security fence.

I can't estimate how many people can fit into the camp. I can't tell what its purpose will be. It appears to be one of the several Yamachim - storage camps - going up around the country. I'm told by different people doing miluim [army reserve duty] that this is not unique. In the pictures [see full picture link] I think you can see the entire camp. You can see how close it is to Elad and how close it is to the road."

Why is a large U.S. flagged camp, one of many we're told, being built in central Israel???
