Giving your Life, Gaining through Martyrdom
Monday, September 27, 2004
An American soldier fights and dies for his country. A firefighter dies rescueing strangers. A policeman dies in the line of duty.
He gave his life for his country. The ultimate sacrifice, the ultimate gift. Chesed, giving.
A homicide bomber kills for his cause. No sacrifice, he gains honor, reaching the highest level of his (or her) society. The fact that he can no longer particpate is besides the point. Martyrdom culture. Gevurah. Strictness.
